Aphra Behn's The Rover

In 1677, poet, libertine, and sometime spy for Charles II, Aphra Behn was the first published professional female playwright in the English language. Her play The Rover, or the Banish’d Cavaliers was wildly popular in the Court, but Behn was dismissed as lewd by critics due to her frank depiction of female sexual longing.

The Hidden Room presents this rarely-performed delight as a mash-up of 1677 and 1983 - a Restoration/New Romantic proto-feminist sex romp, complete with swashbuckling sword fights, forbidden romance, masked revelers, and bitchen live music. Pop your ruffled collar and behold Aphra Behn’s The Rover.

Running time 3 hours including two 10-minute intermissions.

Sunday Feb 17th, 5PM - RELAXED PERFORMANCE - A relaxed performance is intended to be sensitive and accepting of audience members who may benefit from a more eased environment including (but not limited to) those with autistic spectrum conditions, anyone with sensory and communication disorders, learning disabled people, or audience members who for any reason need to make noise during the show.

Wednesday Feb 27th 8PM - Special INDUSTRY NIGHT - It's always a party when the Austin arts community comes out. Whether or not you're in the entertainment industry, join us for this party of a performance.
