paper chairs will be “the theatre in residence” in 2017-2018
at CMPBS, a non-profit sustainable design and architecture firm in East Austin. In our first year working together, we will create site-specific theatre productions as well as curate a wide array of performance and art events on CMPBS’s incredible acreage. This partnership also gives us the opportunity to host a series of workshops and discussions, exploring sustainable strategies for making “green art” in Austin in the 21st Century.

This wickedly funny and wildly fantastical work chronicles the true story of a 17th Century nun who, at the tender age of 14, breaks out of the convent, makes her way across the globe disguised as a man, and ultimately becomes the New World’s first and fiercest Conquistadora. This world premiere is written by co-artistic director and resident playwright Elizabeth Doss, features scenic design by co-artistic director Lisa Laratta, and welcomes back paper chairs co-founder Dustin Wills from New York City to direct the production.
Poor Herman will have a reading October 3rd,
hosted by the Berkshire Historical Society at the Arrowhead Museum,
Herman Mellville’s historic home in Pittsfield, MA.
Written by Elizabeth Doss, directed by Dustin Wills.
An inventive exploration of the life of Herman Melville who arguably wrote America’s best and worst novels back to back in the 1850 (Moby Dick) and 1851 (Pierre and the Ambiguities).

The Austin performing arts community is facing unprecedented challenges to making work. The closing of both The Off Center and Salvage Vanguard Theatre left countless organizations without a home, including paper chairs. We plan to use this space crisis and our new partnership with CMPBS as an opportunity for growth. How can we expand our vision and garner the resources and relationships to create a mindful, conscientious performance space built from sustainable principles and affordable practices? How can this space serve as a hub for cross-pollination for artists and creative people from all disciplines? How can we “go green” from the ground up and let our ideology imbed into our work, play, and process? How can we continue to share Austin’s creative voice with a wider national audience?
There’s so much ahead of us, and we couldn’t do any of it without you.
